Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the right to question specific calls made by the official, echoing the practice already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
