The star has handed over the entirety of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which works to preserve the United Kingdom's independent concert spaces.

Fender was given the cheque on 16 October as his latest record his work was named the top album of the previous year.

The musician has chosen to donate the funds to the MVT, in appreciation of the essential function grassroots venues played in his early career.

"I would not have achieved my current career if it hadn't been for all the performances I did around the region, and beyond, when I was beginning," remarked the artist. "These venues are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – about one-sixth of the total UK scene.

In the last year, top acts like the band Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all supported the trust in its efforts to keep the scene afloat, by including a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which goes to help independent venues.

Sam Fender also took part, raising in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to assist numerous small stages across Britain.

The donation supported spaces that were facing possible closure due to issues caused by floods, fires and bereavements, as well as permit problems, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Some locations were granted funding support in modernizing facilities and gear that helped musicians and audiences.

"The idea that funds from shows in big venues supports the local stages, where it begins for performers like me, is just sensible," Fender has said.

The musician is not the first artist to contribute his honor funds to worthy causes.

Back when the band earned the prize in 1996 for their release their work, frontman the singer stated that the act would donate their cash to the organization War Child.

That year, artist she shared her prize among multiple organizations, including the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"Additionally, I donated a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I practiced gymnastics when I was growing up and they lacked better apparatus," Ms Dynamite explained to outlets.

In recent years, they gave their winnings to the youth organization that supported their group, in addition to other local music groups.

And 1994 winners M People gave their winnings to a MS organization after a close contact was found to have the disease.

"Winning was ample," stated vocalist the singer. "The cash was the bonus but we didn't need the extra, because we had the main prize. So our winning touched somebody else's life."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust revealed it had protected several local spots in south-east England, by bringing them into community ownership.

The Joiners in that area and the other in the city were purchased under the community ownership program, which is supported by Arts Council England and music fans who acquire "stakes" in the buildings.
