EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the case was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
