A minimum of 13 passengers killed and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in public works. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been running in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national undertakings.
